The English Department is one of the oldest departments of Duliajan Girls’ College. The department had a humble beginning in the year 1992 when the college was established. STRENGTH:
Strength of the department depends on the following fields:
Sincere teachers working with complete dedication.
The teachers carry out need analysis to solve the problems of students in the UG level regarding English language as they have come mostly from vernacular medium schools and are not acquainted with it. Methods for aiding the students in acquiring the language skills are done by the teachers.
As the students are economically backward and socially deprived and teachers personally help them in fulfilling their needs with books and other items as well as by counseling them.
The department has a newsletter to update the students.
The teachers apply various innovative teaching techniques
The faculty members are dedicated, competent and can cope with changing demands of the course curriculum.
- Academic: Departmental results of students being satisfactory. Alumni of the department are successful in their careers and are placed in good positions in services.
- Students’ enrolment: Students’ enrolment is high.
- ICT: Projectors are used during PowerPoint presentations and seminars of students. Laptops are used for audio-visual display in classrooms.
- Infrastructure: There is a well equipped department including departmental library, book bank, and electronic sophisticated device namely laptops, projectors, camera, steel almirah etc. Future Plan regarding infrastructure: Plan to upgrade the departmental classroom to a digital one.
- Departmental Library: A well equipped library to fulfill the needs of the students.
WEAKNESS:
Faculty strength is not proportionate to the number of students, especially in general classes. Remedial measures are necessary for students of undergraduate level as they are weak in English due to vernacular medium background. These remedial measures are not practicable due to large number of students.
Future Plan:
- To organize a national level seminar.
- To open up an English speaking course.
- To publishes a departmental yearly magazine.
- To conduct writing skill course for Degree students.
OPPORTUNITY:
Opportunities before the department are many. With proper planning the department can do a lot of activities for the students as well as the public. The department opens up public speaking classes and spoken English classes. Communicative English courses and Business English courses can also be conducted.
CHALLENGES:
Lack of faculty member. Lack of a language laboratory. Infrastructural constraints are the major challenges.
